SCHOOL GUN: Father Expected In Court

The father of a child who brought a loaded gun to school earlier this month is scheduled to be in court Thursday.

Thirty-one-year-old Louis Friestad is charged with neglect and making a hand gun available to a minor.

Johnston police say an eight-year-old boy brought a handgun to Lawson Elementary School on May 7th. School officials saw the gun and took it away before anyone was injured.

TAKE BACK: Local Law Enforcement Holding Gun Events

Several metro police departments are teaming up for “Gun Take Back” events later this week.

Police departments from Urbandale, Clive, Windsor Heights, and West Des Moines are working together to collect unwanted or unusable firearms and ammunition. The event is being held Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Urbandale Police Department at 3740 86th Street.

Individuals dropping off firearms or ammo must have identification and they’ll receive nothing of value for relinquishing the firearms. Police also ask that you unload the firearms and store them in the trunk of your vehicle.

Ankeny, Des Moines, Johnston, Mitchellville and Pleasant Hill police departments are holding similar events at their departments on Friday from noon until 6:00 p.m.

HEALTHY CHOICES: Art Used to Encourage Patients

Art is being used to encourage people visiting the Polk County Health Department to choose healthier lifestyles.

The first of six paintings to be completed over the next two years will be unveiled May 17th from 5-8 p.m.

“Bike Club” is a 6' x 11', oil on canvas painting by local artist, Dick Shook, of a group of cyclists making their way along a rural bike path. 

Shook said that the project was conceived following a visit with his wife to the clinic for a flu shot. He told his wife, “this place needs artwork.” Then he began to work through what kind of art that would be. “We spend an enormous amount of time waiting and it seemed to me we could improve on that time by using art to do more than merely decorate the walls.”

RIDING SAFETY: Bicycle Round-Up Held

The fourth annual Bicycle Round-Up was held Saturday.

The free event began in the Pioneer parking lot at the corner of Pioneer Parkway and South Drive with riders of all ages participating in a bike rodeo. It was an opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency by navigating the obstacle course in an effort to promote riding safety.

Less than a year after their grand opening, owners of a metro vintage store are figuring out what’s next after a fire ruined their business.

Matt Wilson has a made a living off turning what may be junk to one person into treasure for another.

His store, Bisbee Wood and Wire restores vintage or unwanted items and turns them into things that can be used or displayed around the house.

“I try to look past the faded paint and the broken legs and think about what is could be,” says Wilson.

After a fire ignited inside his store, Bisbee Wood and Wire shortly after 4 p.m. Friday evening creativity won’t be enough to save all the unique items inside.

Wilson and a friend were preparing to close the store Friday when he heard a pop in the back-room.

He immediately saw the fire spreading into the attic.

After a fire ignited shortly after 4 p.m. Friday evening, creativity won’t be enough to save all the unique items inside.

“This (globe) probably has no value at a retail standpoint. I will probably cut this globe in half and turn it into a lamp shade at this point,” said Wilson.

Wilson and a friend were preparing to close the store the store for the night when he heard a pop in a backroom.

He immediately saw the fire spreading into the attic.

“That’s when I knew there was no chance to put the fire out myself. I yelled to call 911 and we ran out the front door as quickly as we could,” Wilson told Channel 13 News.

BUSINESS FIRE: Section Of Merle Hay Closed

A stretch of Merle Hay Road was shut down Friday afternoon while crews worked to get a fire under control.

The flames started inside Bisbee Wood and Wire, a vintage shop, around 4:30 p.m.

Authorities say the owner was inside, but was able to escape safely.

Multiple fire crews responded and were able to get the fire put out before 6 p.m.

Authorities are still trying to figure out what started the fire.
